STUDENT EXAM DRAWING OF SPRING COLORS AND LINES

A wonderful student from my classes at The Academy of Art in San Francisco, Jeanette Bakkemd from Norway, created these four season comparisons based strictly on the lines, colors and feeling expressions of each of the four energies represented by the four Universal energies in nature. Each drawing had to be accompanied by a written explanation of the feelings expressed: (This earned her the highest grade!)

An entirely different subject can still express the contrast between the four season energies. Lance Lone designed the following Tarot cards using the same lines, colors and expressions.

WINTER TAROT DRAWING

Winter
"The High Priestess, aloof and serene, stark and simple expresses distinct, poise in sophisticated balance. She represents Winter."

SUMMER TAROT DRAWING

Summer
"The Empress,
dainty and graceful, youthful and relaxed, creates subtle beauty in a elegant manner. She represents Summer."

AUTUMN TAROT DRAWING

Autumn
"The Emperor,
mature and natural, practical and secure, enriches life in an earthy realistic sense. He represents Autumn."

SPRING TAROT DRAWING

Spring
"The Magician, animated and colorful, original and spontaneous, changes life and energy in exaggerated proportions. He represents Spring."

Jessica Franzione chose to show the four energies in bathing suits. Notice the student used the correct colors, fabric patterns, stylized lettering depicting each season, and even the frame cut-outs showing the same feeling.

STUDENT DRAWING USING SWIMWEAR TO EXPRESS THE SEASONS

This is a "Princess" final exam by one of my students, but unfortunately he/she did not have their name attached. It was an excellent project and right on in the descriptions of feelings. (If the student recognizes this, please contact me.)

This following project was created by Woo Young; Taking the letter A he applied color, line and descriptive words using the Universal templates of the seasons to communicate distinct different design feelings.

OVAL "A"

I am a Winter A. My color is purple because I am royal, regal and poised like a queen or king. My lines are oval, classic, simple and balanced. I'm tall, stately and dignified. I am sophisticated. So you can use me on formal occasions.

SUMMER "A"

I am a Summer A. I like light blue because I'm cool, calm gentle, soothing, delicate and fragile. I like lines which are soft and curved. My feeling is feminine and beautiful. I make people feel relaxed. I am youthful and graceful. I like water-colors. So you can use me on dressy occasions.

AUTUMN "A"

I am an Autumn A. My color is brown and I'm earthy, warm and mellow. My lines are square, heavy and masculine. I am comfortable and casual. My symbol is the masculinity of strength. I am sporty. So you you can use me on casual occasions.

SPRING "A"

I am a Spring A. I like the color of orange because it is bright and cheerful. My color is bold, and my lines are diagonal and suggest movement. My triangle shape represents the exaggerated feeling of life. I am dramatic, colorful, dynamic, changeable and bright. I am joyful. So you can use me on fun occasions.

One student presented four girl's heads applying her knowledge of colors and lines to hairstyles.

STUDENT EXAM DRAWING OF SEASONS USING SLIPPERS TO SHOW COLOR AND LINES

PERSONOLOGY (SEE FACE READING), the study of feature lines, shows that structure follows form and applies universally to everything. At the Academy of Art, the students all analyzed each others features and this exercise made a huge impact, efficiently driving home the fact that lines, shapes and colors are real and can be deliberately applied to creative efforts. The fact that Universal language applies to all art forms, from the color and shape of a button, to the fashioning of cartoons, and more importantly in the formation of human form, gives emphasis to the order, intention and consistent perfection of creation. The following are examples of class participation in this subject:
